In the Service Village, there was a small café run by an old, wise Ranger named Burlow Broadstride. Travelers came from everywhere—tired, confused, sometimes frustrated. Burlow didn’t just serve food. He served understanding.
On the wall hung a picture of his most famous creation: The Trust Sandwich.
“Every good conversation,” Burlow said, “is built the same way a good sandwich is experienced.”
He always began with the top bun.

Before anything else, he looked each traveler in the eyes and said, “Thank you for coming. Your time matters. Your relationship with us matters. ”That was the first touch of warmth, the first sign of respect.
Then came the layers.
First, Probing — he gently asked questions, not to interrogate, but to truly understand what the hunger was beneath the surface. Next, Echoing — he repeated their words so they could hear themselves clearly and know they were truly heard. Then, Resolving — he brought solutions, not rushed, not careless, but thoughtfully prepared. After that, Pitching — he offered what would genuinely help, not what was easiest to serve.
Finally, he placed the bottom bun.
“Thank you for your time,” he said. “I’m grateful you trusted me with this.”
The travelers always left fuller than when they arrived—not just in body, but in heart. They felt respected. They felt safe. They felt understood.
And the younger Rangers learned:
Trust is built the same way every great sandwich is held together —with care in the middle, and gratitude on both ends.
